The New Subaru Impreza Takes on the Honda Competition in Cumming, GA

Commuters on the daily grind and die-hard road-trippers alike can look forward to a capable, comfortable, and well-equipped ride in both to be sure, but at the end of the travel day, it's our six-star emblem that pulls ahead. 2018 Honda Civic

  • For one, our automaker's compact car builds in a flat-four SUBARU BOXER engine design. It dovetails seamlessly with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, the brand's proprietary permanent, always-on AWD system. The latter is low-maintenance, with few moving parts, and all in all, makes for dependable balance, with a professional command of traction both on the road and off the beaten path in the Atlanta area. The standard and turbo inline-four engine options in the new Civic can't make the same claim, and AWD isn't offered anywhere in Honda's sedan lineup.
  • Secondly, the new Impreza puts out a sprightly 145 pound-feet of torque compared to the Civic at 138. That's with a tighter 35.4-foot turning circle from curb to curb, compared to the Honda competition's 35.7 feet. Not only is that more get-up-and-go for a ride that's more energetic as a result, but the Impreza even maneuvers more deftly in cramped spaces. It's better yet if you consider features like Active Torque Vectoring, standard in Impreza 2.0i Sport trims. The latest Civic doesn't offer it.
  • You can even count on a larger fuel tank, 13.2 gallons to Honda's 12.4 -- fewer trips to the pump around Duluth, more time spent cruising.

  • For the long haul up to Roswell, you'll want ample room to stretch out. The 2018 Impreza offers it, with 112.1 cubic feet of space for you and your passengers. The 2018 Civic offers only 97.8 cubic feet. For Impreza, that's better front head and leg room as well as more rear head and shoulder room. You can even find heated front seats standard in Impreza 2.0i Premium, earlier in the line than Honda, which makes them available only at the midrange, in Civic EX-T.
  • Moreover, we're better-equipped at base, with a 6.5-inch SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia infotainment system incorporating Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for extending smartphone functionality to the dash. At its base, Civic offers only a 5-inch color LCD, and Apple CarPlay or Android Auto can't be found until graduation to the Civic EX trim.

  • And Subaru stays properly appointed, with 8.0-inch STARLINK Multimedia Plus and Multimedia Navigation variants at higher trims. Honda's step up is only to a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen. Plus, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System is a separate feature, and even then, it's only standard at the top of the line, in Civic Touring.
  • Subaru even bests Honda on safety. Though both models are rated five stars overall by the NHTSA for crashworthiness, the Impreza earns a 2018 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the IIHS, with a highest rating of Good across the board and superior front crash prevention when properly equipped. Civic's headlights, on the other hand, are rated poorly, and its LATCH child seat anchor system only earned an acceptable rating.
  • Best of all, a new 2018 Subaru Impreza is even more affordable at base than the new 2018 Honda Civic, with an MSRP of around $19,355 to the latter at $19,835.
